Description

Late afternoon across the Tres Amigos - Archimedes, Aristillus and Autolycus in eastern Mare Imbrium.

The giant of the trio, Archimedes, is 81 km in diameter and has a triangular promontory that extends some 30 km southeast of the rim (pointing towards bottom of image).

Rays of light ash dusting from the Autolycus impact can be seen as pale washes across the basalt-flooded floor of Archimedes.

Montes Spitzbergen at top of image is a solitary mountain range in eastern Mare Imbrium - and is named after the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic ocean north of Norway.

Smaller peripheral craters around this magnificent trio include Bancroft and the buried Spurr crater. Rimae Fresnel at bottom right.

The crash site of Luna 2 - the first man-made object to 'land' on the moon is labelled.

04-04-2021 (Phillip Island, Victoria).
